Yesterday, Apple announced its new smartphones and redesigned Apple Watch, which it dubs “All new. For a better you.” According to the company, the Apple Watch Series 4 has been re-engineered to help you stay even more active, healthy, and connected and “inspires you to live a healthier life by helping you manage everything from everyday stress to calories burned. At the same time, it monitors your heart rate and lets you know if it detects something of concern. And that sense of security now goes a step further with fall detection and Emergency SOS.” The company adds that the Apple Watch Series 4 is “capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. It’s a momentous achievement for a wearable device that can provide critical real-time data for doctors and peace of mind for you.” According to Dr. Ivor Benjamin, president of the American Heart Association, the heart-monitoring features are “game changing,” especially, as NPR reports, “the ability to detect an irregular heart rhythm, known as atrial fibrillation.” Benjamin added that it will help patients share information about their symptoms with their physicians, not just when they’re in the doctor’s office. Coincidentally, the FDA has just granted 510(k) clearance to PhysIQ’s atrial fibrillation detection analytics system. This is an expansion of the company’s digital health platform, which delivers clinical insights from wearable biosensors and AI-based physiology analytics.

MORE WEARABLE TECH

Snap (Snapchat) has launched new styles of Spectacles, which look more like traditional sunglasses.

LIVING AND SOCIETY

According to Nitasha Tiku in WIRED,Silicon Valley Wants to Use Algorithms for Debt Collection. Tiku also sarcastically tweeted: “Of course the end state of social media is being “friends” with your debt collector. After trying to reinvent student lending, personal loans, and credit scoring, tech investors are backing debt collection startups as consumer debt reaches record highs.” Tiku writes that “Investors who purchase debt for cents on the dollar and then try to collect the whole amount, and the collection agencies they hire, are getting increasingly aggressive. One in four consumers contacted by debt collectors feels threatened, and most consumers say the calls persist even after requests to stop, according to a 2017 study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”

HEALTHCARE

According to a story by Kimberly Veklerov in the San Francisco Chronicle, California has learned to keep pregnant women and new moms from dying. Veklerov points out that “As deaths of new and expectant moms multiplied in the United States, the picture in California and the rest of the developed world has veered in the opposite direction.” The results were achieved via “analyzing public health data, convening an array of public and private health groups, creating a data system for hospitals to measure their progress, and developing health interventions for use across the state.”

FUNDING & FINANCING

Mount Sinai Health System spinoff RxHealth has raised $1.8 million, which it will use to build out its first-to-market bulk prescription digital therapeutics and patient engagement tool.

Peerfit, an enterprise health company, has raised $8 million to further connect fitness studios to employees and companies with wellness dollars to spend.

Notable Health has closed a $13.5 million Series A round of financing, which it will use to expand its AI-powered physician-patient interaction platform.

Cricket Health, a tech-enabled provider of integrated kidney care, has raised $24 million in a Series A funding round.

Mirror has raised $25 million and launched its $1,500 connected mirror that’s used for virtual fitness classes. The company delivers in-home workouts through large mirrors that are connected to live and on-demand fitness classes. Users watch themselves on the mirror/screen while they exercise and are simultaneously coached by a virtual fitness instructor.
