The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Dec 11

Greetings!

An AI astronaut named Cimon recently made its debut on the International @Space_Station. A collaboration between IBM and Airbus, the 3D-printed plastic robot is intended to both help astronauts with tasks—like visual walkthroughs for part installations—plus simply serve as a companion when it gets lonely up in space. A YouTube video of the interaction is linked in the image below

In a related application of AI, Jarvish’s new CrossHelmet motorcycle helmet integrates with AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant plus features an augmented reality-powered heads-up display (HUD) showing navigation, ride data, and video from a rear view camera.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Apple’s new version of its Beddit sleep tracker is more visually appealing, but doesn’t add any new features beyond the current capabilities of recording sleep duration, heart rate, breathing, snoring, and room conditions.

LIVING & SOCIETY

The US Secret Service is planning to test facial recognition in and around the White House. The system will monitor and scan video feeds and images of individuals passing by on public streets and parks in the vicinity of the White House.

HEALTHCARE & PUBLIC HEALTH

The World Health Organization has launched an online knowledge platform to encourage the exchange of ideas and partnerships in tackling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). One of objectives is to obtain new perspectives that may help reduce premature deaths from chronic diseases.

The U.S. Veterans Affairs Health system has expanded its online medical appointments to include Walmart sites. Veterans will soon be able to choose to obtain certain health services at a VA hospital, a private doctor, or Walmart.

An agreement reached at the recent U.N. conference on biodiversity gives the green light for scientists to proceed cautiously with gene drives in the fight against diseases. Gene drives are genetically engineered organisms that spread their genes in the wild.

M&A AND FUNDING

Propeller Health is being acquired by ResMed in a $225M deal that will expand ResMed’s line of connected respiratory devices for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Digital-first healthcare insurance startup Bright Health has raised a $200 million Series C. The company is now valued at $950 million.
