Digital Health Funding 2018

In its biggest year so far, funding for digital health totalled $14.6 billion in 2018. According to data compiled by Startup Health, this amount is approximately 14 times what it was in 2010, when it barely tipped $1B. Their report adds that “virtually every sector of healthcare is thinking about, or already leveraging digital. In 2018, newer niche sub-sectors gained increased attention from investors, including machine learning, blockchain, AI, and IoT. In other words, in 2019, digital health = health. On the other hand, old habits die hard. There is still a temptation to rely on incremental, band-aid innovation out of necessity because that’s what customers are buying and what investors are funding.”

Smart Cities vs. Consumer Privacy

All too often, “smart city tech” is a smokescreen hiding pervasive & needless stockpiling of residents’ data. Check out ⁦@ACLU_NorCal’s ⁩guide to these issues… – @Matt_Cagle

The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Dec 31

Greetings!

Researchers at the CZ Biohub division of the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) have published a report in Nature on the results of a wireless implantable brain device system called the WAND. As Erin Brodwin at BI reports, in a new study on primates, the system is able to record, stimulate, and disrupt or even stop movement in real time. The method is being described as a therapy intended to treat diseases like epilepsy or Parkinson’s by stopping a seizure or other disruptive motion just as it starts. The research is reportedly being conducted in isolation from Facebook’s related work with brain-computer interfaces (BCI).

In another study published in Nature, an implanted battery-free self-powered vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device was shown to be effective at producing weight control in rats. The device, which automatically generates electrical stimulations in correlation to stomach movement, kept the average body weight controlled at 350 g, or 38% less than the control groups. Basically, the system fools the rat’s brain into thinking that it has a full stomach.

HEALTHCARE DISRUPTION

In contrast to alarmist concerns that the Apple Watch’s new ECG feature may place an increased burden on the healthcare system that it can’t handle as currently set up, there are incidences emerging of the Watch’s built-in electrocardiogram (ECG) function detecting previously-undiagnosed unusual heart rhythm associated with an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. For example, after updating his Watch’s software, a Richmond, Virginia man was immediately alerted him that he may have atrial fibrillation. Doctors later confirmed that he did have a-fib, which “occurs when abnormal electrical impulses causes (sic) the top chambers of the heart, the atria, to quiver and spasm. Blood can pool in heart chambers affected by a-fib, increasing the risk of stroke-causing blood clots. People with a-fib often are prescribed blood thinners.”

LIVING & SOCIETY

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted the following “FYI: thanks to anti-net neutrality FCC Leadership, your text messages can now be monitored, censored, or blocked. Those concerned w/ privacy are moving away from default cell texting. ⁦There are alternative texting app recommendations in this article.”

According to Brian Hauss, an attorney with the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project: “Should it be a crime to call public officials corrupt? Yes, according to the police in Exeter, New Hampshire. Earlier this year, they arrested a local man for writing a comment on a news website accusing Police Chief William Shupe of covering for a corrupt officer.”

REGULATORY APPROVALS

The FDA has approved Teva Pharmaceuticals’ ProAir Digihaler, which the company describes as “the first and only digital inhaler with built-in sensors which connects to a companion mobile application and provides inhaler use information to people with asthma and COPD.”

GENOMICS

Dr. He Jiankui, the Chinese scientist who created an international uproar after announcing that he had created the first genetically edited babies, is reportedly being held under house arrest in a guesthouse at the Southern University of Science and Technology.

Consumers receiving surprise DNA family family relationship test results are calling into 23andMe’s customer service line and, effectively, turning the reps into therapists of a sort. According to Kent Hillyer, head of customer care for 23andMe: “We don’t really play the role of therapist, but rather listen and try to be sympathetic and empathetic, getting them to process things.”

FUNDING

Tridiuum, a venture-backed maker of a software platform that tracks behavioral health indicators, just raised $9.5 million Series B round with an eye to scaling its sales, product and marketing operations.

K Health, which provides consumers with an AI-powered primary healthcare platform, has raised $25 million in Series B funding.

The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Dec 11

Greetings!

Pear Therapeutics has received FDA clearance for its reSET-O system as a treatment for patients recovering from opioid abuse disorder. According to the FDA’s announcement, reSET-O is used “to help increase retention (the amount of time a patient participates) in an outpatient treatment program for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). The reSET-O app is a prescription cognitive behavioral therapy intended to be used in addition to outpatient treatment under the care of a health care professional, in conjunction with treatment that includes buprenorphine and contingency management. Contingency management is a behavior modification intervention that establishes a connection between new, targeted behavior and the opportunity to obtain a desired reward.”

A new patent application by Amazon combines face surveillance with Ring, the smart doorbell camera company acquired by Amazon earlier this year. The system would enable homeowners and the police to match the faces of people walking with images of “suspicious” people contained in a photo database. Moreover, homeowners can add photos of people they deem to be “suspicious” into the system. Jacob Snow, a Technology and Civil Liberties Attorney at the ACLU of Northern California, states that “Amazon is dreaming of a dangerous future, with its technology at the center of a massive decentralized surveillance network, running real-time facial recognition on members of the public using cameras installed in people’s doorbells.” Snow adds that “The ACLU and other civil rights groups have repeatedly warned that face surveillance poses an unprecedented threat to civil liberties and civil rights that must be stopped before it becomes widespread. The history of discriminatory government surveillance makes clear that face surveillance will disproportionately harm people already targeted by the government and subjected to racial profiling and abuse—immigrants, people of color, and the formerly incarcerated.”

In related news, Taylor Swift concert-goers viewing a screen playing rehearsal clips were unwittingly scanned by a facial recognition system seeking to identify the singer’s known stalkers.

LIVING & SOCIETY

Anti-robot vigilantes in Arizona are trying to scare off Waymo’s self-driving cars. According to The Arizona Republic, “People have thrown rocks at Waymos. The tire on one was slashed while it was stopped in traffic. The vehicles have been yelled at, chased and one Jeep was responsible for forcing the vans off roads six times.”

Vitaminwater has announced a promotional contest that will result in it giving $100,000 to someone who can ditch their smartphone for a year. And even if someone is able to make it just six months, they will receive $10,000.

A group of people who had to abandon their capsized boat off the coast of Okinawa, Japan were able to use an iPhone to call for help.

Bad news if you’re a Google-based Android smartphone user, as unlike the Apple iPhone X, it was unable to defend against being opened using face-unlocking with 3D-printed replicas of a human head.

Facebook revealed that a bug in a photo API gave app developers access to the photos of millions of users, including images that they had uploaded but never shared. The bug also allowed developers to access user’s timeline photos, Facebook Stories, and Marketplace photos.

GENOMICS

A recent experiment involving giving people fake DNA test results found that this knowledge can produce a placebo effect. In the study, people who were told they had the high-risk version of a gene linked to their capacity for aerobic exercise ran for a smaller amount of time than they did before the study. Also, people who were told they had the protective version of a gene linked to hunger cues, reported being less hungry than before.

REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS

From the FDA… Digital Health Update: FDA Report on Non-Device Software Functions Now Available

“Today, the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) published a report that highlights the agency’s findings, in general, on the five software functions excluded from the device definition by the 21st Century Cures Act. These software functions range from software that offers administrative support to a health care facility to software that helps patients keep a healthy lifestyle but is not specific to a treatment of a disease, among others. The FDA found these software functions have more benefits than risks to patient safety and health. The report also details best practices related to implementation and training that could promote safety, education, and competency.”

From NICE… Evidence standards framework for digital health technologies

“As digital health technologies develop at an increasing pace, we’ve worked with partners to develop standards that ensure new technologies are clinically effective and offer economic value.

The aim of these standards is to make it easier for innovators and commissioners to understand what good levels of evidence for digital healthcare technologies look like, while meeting the needs of the health and care system, patients, and users.”

Greetings!

An AI astronaut named Cimon recently made its debut on the International @Space_Station. A collaboration between IBM and Airbus, the 3D-printed plastic robot is intended to both help astronauts with tasks—like visual walkthroughs for part installations—plus simply serve as a companion when it gets lonely up in space. A YouTube video of the interaction is linked in the image below

In a related application of AI, Jarvish’s new CrossHelmet motorcycle helmet integrates with AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant plus features an augmented reality-powered heads-up display (HUD) showing navigation, ride data, and video from a rear view camera.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Apple’s new version of its Beddit sleep tracker is more visually appealing, but doesn’t add any new features beyond the current capabilities of recording sleep duration, heart rate, breathing, snoring, and room conditions.

LIVING & SOCIETY

The US Secret Service is planning to test facial recognition in and around the White House. The system will monitor and scan video feeds and images of individuals passing by on public streets and parks in the vicinity of the White House.

HEALTHCARE & PUBLIC HEALTH

The World Health Organization has launched an online knowledge platform to encourage the exchange of ideas and partnerships in tackling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). One of objectives is to obtain new perspectives that may help reduce premature deaths from chronic diseases.

The U.S. Veterans Affairs Health system has expanded its online medical appointments to include Walmart sites. Veterans will soon be able to choose to obtain certain health services at a VA hospital, a private doctor, or Walmart.

An agreement reached at the recent U.N. conference on biodiversity gives the green light for scientists to proceed cautiously with gene drives in the fight against diseases. Gene drives are genetically engineered organisms that spread their genes in the wild.

M&A AND FUNDING

Propeller Health is being acquired by ResMed in a $225M deal that will expand ResMed’s line of connected respiratory devices for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Digital-first healthcare insurance startup Bright Health has raised a $200 million Series C. The company is now valued at $950 million.

The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Nov 20

Greetings!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the high profile U.S. Representative-elect for New York’s 14th congressional district, is leveraging digital technology—particularly social media—in powerful and profound ways. These include improving accessibility to politics for the hearing impaired, empowering women in the workplace, battling misogyny, and correcting false media reports.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram feed—which recently featured a picture of her along with fellow newly-elected congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib and the caption “Squad”—spurred Washington Post columnist Monica Hesse to write: “But categorizing the posts as merely giggly “squad goals” is missing a deeper point, I think. There’s sophisticated work going into the messaging. These social media posts aren’t just about female friendship; they’re also about the behind-the-scenes strategies women in mostly male workplaces have always employed to get stuff done.”

And when a recent article in Politico stated that she had a “closed-door argument” with another lawmaker, Ocasio-Cortez responded with a correction in a tweet: “This is completely false – I never even have a direct interaction with him today. When did Politico turn into TMZ?”. (Note: TMZ is a tabloid news website.)

In another highly-publicized Twitter engagement, Washington Examiner reporter Eddie Scarry tweeted a photo of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez with the comment: “I’ll tell you something: that jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.” In response, not only did Dictionary.com tweet: “Girl. Noun. A female child, from birth to full growth. E.g. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not a girl.”, but tens of thousands of people responded with tweets mocking the conservative journalist. Ocasio-Cortez herself replied that: “If I walked into Congress wearing a sack, they would laugh & take a picture of my backside. If I walk in with my best sale-rack clothes, they laugh & take a picture of my backside. Dark hates light – that’s why you tune it out. Shine bright & keep it pushing.✨”

And when Scarry deleted his tweet, Ocasio-Cortez added: “Oh, does @eScarry think he can delete his misogyny without an apology? I don’t think so. You’re a journalist – readers should know your bias.”

HEALTHCARE AND PRIVACY

Google’s healthcare-focused subsidiary DeepMind—which provides its “Streams” AI-powered digital assistant app to nurses and doctors at several NHS hospitals (and has previously run into controversy over gathering data on 1.6 million patients without informing them)—will be moved into the main company and no longer be independent of Google.

The move breaks DeepMind’s pledge that “data will never be connected to Google accounts or services”. Responding to the announcement, Julia Powles, a lawyer and privacy expert tweeted: “This is TOTALLY unacceptable. DeepMind repeatedly, unconditionally promised to *never* connect people’s intimate, identifiable health data to Google. Now it’s announced…exactly that. This isn’t transparency, it’s trust demolition. (grabs: Powles & Hodson)”

LIVING AND SOCIETY

Plan International is calling on the South Sudanese government to investigate a Facebook auction which led to the marriage of a 17-year-old girl. Facebook did take down the post, but not in time. A spokesperson for Facebook  stated: “Any form of human trafficking — whether posts, pages, ads or groups is not allowed on Facebook. We removed the post and permanently disabled the account belonging to the person who posted this to Facebook.”

RESEARCH

While unfortunate, the recent announcement that Novartis and Verily have canceled their efforts to create a glucose-monitoring smart contact lens, it should come as no surprise since, in 2016, it wasreported that a former Verily manager described the device as just “slideware” that didn’t exist outside of PowerPoint presentations. In a company blog post, Verily’s CTO Brian Otis indicated that: “Our clinical work on the glucose-sensing lens demonstrated that there was insufficient consistency in our measurements of the correlation between tear glucose and blood glucose concentrations to support the requirements of a medical device. In part, this was associated with the challenges of obtaining reliable tear glucose readings in the complex on-eye environment. For example, we found that interference from biomolecules in tears resulted in challenges in obtaining accurate glucose readings from the small quantities of glucose in the tear film. In addition, our clinical studies have demonstrated challenges in achieving the steady state conditions necessary for reliable tear glucose readings.”

REGULATION

The FDA has issued a Federal Register notice regarding promoting the development of digital health tools to inform the safe & effective use of prescription drugs. In the announcement, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. states: “As the practical value of digital health technologies continues to advance, consumers are increasingly using these new tools to inform their everyday health decisions. Many of these advances have been on the delivery side of healthcare, where digital tools are helping inform medical decisions by patients and providers. As part of these opportunities, the FDA wants to promote the development of digital technologies that can also help guide the safe and effective use of medicines, to help patients improve their health.”

The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Nov 14

Greetings!

The third installment of EBD Group and Demy-Colton’s digital medicine report has been released: “Digital Medicine 2018 Report: Part 3 – Securing Against Cyber Threats“. As difficult as it may be to imagine the future of technology, it presents both amazing opportunities and amazing challenges for the healthcare industry. From drug developers all the

In response to Vijay Pande’s Scientific American op-ed “How to Engineer Biology“—which I shared in last week’s Fourth Wave newsletter—Derek Lowe, an organic chemist and commentator at Science Translational Medicine, has written “Engineering Biology, For Real?” In his post, Lowe criticizes, among other things, Pande’s characterization of biological, nature-made systems being as easily understandable and manipulatable as man-made systems and technologies. He also points to the lack of company examples provided by Pande as evidence for some statements of what is already possible and happening. Nonetheless, while Lowe does acknowledge that digital technology and process improvements have changed the field of life sciences, his intro is a blunt repudiation of Pande’s thesis: “Any article titled “How to Engineer Biology” is going to get a look from me – and when I’m referenced in the opening paragraphs, especially so. This is a piece by Vijay Pande in Scientific American, and I get called out for my naming of the “Andy Grove Fallacy” (found in this post and the links therein). That’s the idea that the drug industry makes slower progress than Silicon Valley does, therefore applying the engineering and management styles of the Valley to drug industry will speed things up. I’ll spare you the suspense: that’s wrong. See that last link above for why.”

LIVING AND SOCIETY

Trades Union Congress, the UK’s federation of trade unions, is sounding the alarm over the prospect of British companies implanting their employees with microchips. Scott Gilfillan, a writer and editor for the TUC, writes: ““I’m a person, not a number” – why microchipping staff is a sinister step too far“. Gilfillan points out that the organization would like to hear what security concerns could possibly justify implanting staff with microchips.

RESEARCH

UC San Diego bioengineering professor Kun Zhang has been awarded two grants totaling $14 million to build 3D digital maps of human organs that are accurate to the level of a single cell. A grant from the NIH’s BRAIN Initiative will fund work on a map of the entire human brain. Another grant is part of the NIH’s Human BioMolecular Atlas Program and will be used to map the lungs, kidneys, bladder, and ureters. For more, see the UCSD News post “Bioengineers Awarded $14M from NIH to Build Digital Maps of Brain, Other Organs at Single-Cell Level“.

INNOVATION

North Carolina-based Precise Bio has launched a new ophthalmology business unit to develop 3D-bioprinted corneas. According to CEO Aryeh Batt: “We plan to put our printers in eye banks”. Precise Bio’s printer uses laser-induced forward transfer to propel droplets of bio-inks (comprised of biological materials like epithelial cells and collagenon) onto a surface.

Privacy International (PI), a UK-based charity that defends and promotes the right to privacy across the world and challenges overreaching state and corporate surveillance, has filed GDPR complaintsagainst seven companies: Experian, Equifax, Oracle, Acxiom, Criteo, Quantcast, and Tapad, for “wide-scale and systematic infringements of data protection law.” The complaints allege that the practices of these companies have breached GDPR principles of transparency, fairness, lawfulness, purpose limitation, data minimization, and accuracy, plus that they have no legal basis to use data in the way they do.

According to Privacy International’s legal officer, Ailidh Callander: “The data broker and ad-tech industries are premised on exploiting people’s data. Most people have likely never heard of these companies, and yet they are amassing as much data about us as they can and building intricate profiles about our lives. The GDPR sets clear limits on the abuse of personal data. PI’s complaints set out why we consider these companies’ practices are failing to meet the standard—yet we’ve only been able to scratch the surface with regard to their data exploitation practices. GDPR gives regulators teeth and now is the time to use them to hold these companies to account.”

Hims, a men’s telehealth direct-to-consumer (DTC) company—not to be confused with HIMSS, the non-profit digital health organization—has launched a new vertical for women called, naturally, “ Hers”. The site will sell prescription skin creams, birth control pills, and Addyi, a controversial libido-boosting medicine.

LIVING & SOCIETY

According to a new report, kids’ apps are crammed with ads. In a new study of the most downloaded apps for children ages 5 and younger, researchers found advertising in almost all of them.

The new Roomba robot vacuum by iRobot collects data on your home and also takes pictures of the inside. Moreover, it shares the collected data with Google.

Despite Facebook’s assurances of privacy precautions being integrated within its new Portal+ in-home telecommunications camera and video screen, WSJ reporter Joanna Stern refused to actually use the system in her home and titled her review of it: Facebook Portal Non-Review: Why I Didn’t Put Facebook’s Camera in My Home.

FDA CLEARANCE

The FDA has cleared the first-ever direct to consumer (DTC) genetic test for how well medications may work. However, the agency states that the new test by 23andMe can’t assess whether a drug is appropriate or be considered by users to be medical advice.

RESEARCH & DRUG DEVELOPMENt

In a Scientific American op-ed, Vijay Pande, a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz leading the firm’s investments in digital health companies, writes about how we can already engineer biology and should be doing more of it in drug development: “In biology, we’ve already surpassed Moore’s Law; the cost of genomics has come down over a million-fold in two decades. Why can’t we carry this process to other areas in bio as well? The question now isn’t whether this is possible in biology or not, as the Grove fallacy argued, but how to do it, given where we are in engineering biology today.”

A wearable ultrasound patch developed by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is able to record central blood pressure in the carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and external jugular vein. The patch emits continuous ultrasound waves that monitor changes in the shape and size of pulsing blood vessels, an indication of rising and dropping blood pressure.

M&A

Doc.ai, a company that plans to pay cryptocurrency to people when they share their medical data with scientists, hasacquired Crestle.ai, which has a platform that enables the quick deployment of AI systems.

DNA sequencing giant Illumina is acquiringPacific Biosciences for $1.2 billion, or about half its IPO price. While Oxford Nanopore is the main competition to PacBio in the long-read market, according to Illumina CEO Francis Illumina: “The place where PacBio really differentiates itself is accuracy. Its accuracy profile is really better than anything else in the market.”

In response to this market consolidation, Yaniv Erlich, CSO at genealogy platform MyHeritage tweeted a thread with his comments on how the “ILMN purchase of PacBio is bad news for the genomics community.”

LIVING & SOCIETY

During a recent speech in Brussels, Apple’s Tim Cook said that tech is hurting people and regulation is needed to protect consumers. According to Cook: “We see vividly—painfully—how technology can harm rather than help. Platforms and algorithms that promised to improve our lives can actually magnify our worst human tendencies.”

The Kinsa thermometer tells firms in what regions to target their advertising based on your personal health data. As comedy Twitter account @internetofshit  tweeted: “Use a cheap smart thermometer, get targeted flu ads. The future sucks.”

Automaker GM recently revealed that it secretly gathered data on 90,000 drivers’ radio-listening habits and locations.
