The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Jul 18

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics (NCB), a UK-based charitable organization focused on bioethical issues related to biological and medical research has deemed that editing the DNA of a human embryo, sperm, or egg to influence the characteristics of a future person — aka ‘heritable genome editing’ — could be morally permissible. One example they cite is excluding a heritable disease or a predisposition to cancer in later life. The NCB recommends that these efforts should secure the welfare of the future person and not increase disadvantage, discrimination, or division in society

A new study, published in JAMA indicates that there is an association ofdigital media use (e.g. social media and watching online video) with subsequent symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among adolescents. According to lead study author Adam Leventhal: “If we can determine if there is a potential causal link that is consistent across studies, then we can design interventions to curb media exposure. Even simple educational information to let teachers, parents, and pediatric health professionals know that there could be an increased risk when they talk with their teens about digital media use might be helpful.”

PRODUCT RECALL

Ortovox has recalled 20,000 of its “ORTOVOX 3+” avalanche transceivers deemed to be unsafe due to a software issue that can result in the “temporary disruption of the transmission function.” The company states that: “Devices affected by the recall may no longer be used without the required software update to version 2.2. This precautionary recall applies exclusively to ORTOVOX 3+ avalanche transceivers running software version 2.1 – no matter what color.”

FDA CLEARANCE

Zebra Medical has obtained FDA clearance for its AI-powered heart disease detection system. According to Dr. Ran Balicer at Clalit Research Institute: “Identification of high-risk individuals is key to prevention. Zebra’s algorithm could run on CT studies of the chest and potentially help identify people with cardiovascular risk sooner, allowing more effective treatment and overall reduction of adverse outcomes and healthcare costs for HMOs such as Clalit.”

FUNDING

Verge Genomics has raised $32 million. The company uses AI to speed up the drug development process and has a particular focus on therapies for Parkinsons and ALS, which it plans to test in humans several years from now.

Spring Health has raised $6 million. The company offers a predictive AI service that analyzes clinical trials and real-world evidence to match patients to mental health therapies and other treatments.

GENOMICS

A new study published in Nature states that repair of double-strand breaks induced by CRISPR–Cas9 leads to large deletions and complex rearrangements of DNA bases that could produce negative health outcomes in recipients of CRISPR-based therapies.
