The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Jul 27

new report indicates that fewer hospital deaths occur after healthcare systems switch to electronic health records. Unfortunately, death rates initially creep higher in the transition period to EHRs. The researchers looked at death rates for patients 65 and older in data from 3,000 U.S. hospitals for the years 2008 through 2013.

The above news may exacerbate the situation in Australia, where millions may opt out of the country’s new digital health records system as a result of both doctor and patient concerns over privacy risks. Doctors are even threatening a boycott. The government expects that about 10% of eligible citizens may decline to participate in the program.

LIVING AND SOCIETY

new report from the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) finds that computational propaganda is growing around the world. According to the report: “The manipulation of public opinion over social media platforms has emerged as a critical threat to public life. Around the world, government agencies and political parties are exploiting social media platforms to spread junk news and disinformation, exercise censorship and control, and undermine trust in media, public institutions and science.”

HEALTHCARE

Pyschologists are using VR in addition to regular therapy practices aimed at helping patients with their body- and food-related issues. Meta analysis of 26 previous studies on VR used in this way indicates it is “an acceptable and promising therapeutic tool” for patients with eating disorders.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to create a new $100M Connected Care Pilot Program to support the use of telemedicine for low-income and rural Americans, including military veterans. The intent is to increase access to healthcare, improve outcomes, and reduce costs. The FCC’s announcement is available here.

RESEARCH

A new online platform by Massachusetts-based nonprofit Vivli Center will make it easier for researchers to request anonymized clinical trial data for individual patients.

DARPA is selecting teams to develop aneural interface that would allow troops to connect to military systems using their brainwaves and let those systems transmit information back directly into users’ brains.

FUNDING

BinaryVR has raised $4.5M to bring people face-to-face with their digitized selves. By focusing on the mouth, the system is able to translate facial input to a VR avatar.

League, a provider of employee wellness and health benefits management tools for companies and employees, has raised $47 million.

FDA CLEARANCE

The FDA has cleared Healthy.io’s smartphone-based urine testing kit. The system uses computer vision, algorithms, AI, and the phone’s camera to perform urine tests of samples collected with a dipstick. Various conditions can be diagnsosed, including infections, chronic diseases, and pregnancy-related issues.

WEARABLE TECH

Huawei’s new TalkBand B5 fitness trackers has both a screen and a detachable bluetooth headset.

While it may look like many digital watches, the new $250 iBeat Heart Watch is capable of saving your life in an emergency.

DEMISE

After raising more than $20 million in funding, mental health startup Lantern is winding down its business operations. The company’s $50/month service helped people better cope with stress, anxiety, and even body image issues.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY

Dongguan Diqee-branded Internet-connected robot vacuums with microphones and night vision cameras have been found to be vulnerable to DDoS attacks plus hackers taking them over. Oh, and they might also be used to mine bitcoin.

GENOMICS

The DNA data of 5 million 23andMe customers will be used by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in an effort to design new drugs. This is reportedly the biggest partnership yet for a DTC genetic testing company. 23andMe’s customers are asked to sign a waiver for the company to use their data in sicentific research.

Weightloss company Nutrisystem (also the provider of the South Beach Diet) has partnered with Genetic Direction to launcha new product called “DNA Body Blueprint”, which is described as: “a genetic-based product using a proprietary algorithm that provides an integrated personal action plan focused on eating behaviors, nutrition and metabolism.”
