The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Aug 6

Google is reportedly developing asearch app for the Chinese market that would censor and blacklist websites and search terms on topics such as human rights, democracy, religion, and peaceful protest. The app has already been demonstrated to the Chinese government and, if approved, may launch within the next nine months. China reportedly already blocks online information about political opponents, free speech, sex, academic studies, and references to anti-communism and dissidents. The government also bans websites describing the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre of thousands of protestors. Chinese social media website Weibo also prohibits mentions of books such as George Orwell’s 1984and Animal Farm, which mock and/or negatively portray authoritarian governments. The country even censors Western social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, plus news outlets like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Censorship is also a concern in the United States, but in this case by corporations, as Matt Taibbi writes in a Rolling Stone article: Beware the Slippery Slope of Facebook Censorship. In response to reports that Facebook shut down a series of accounts for the stated reason that they “sought to inflame social and political tensions in the United States” and “their activity was similar — and in some cases connected — to that of Russian accounts during the 2016 election,” Taibbi comments and asks: “Similar? What does “similar” mean? The death-pit for civil liberties is usually found in a combination of fringe/unpopular people or ideas and a national security emergency. This is where we are with this unsettling new confab of Facebook, Congress and the Trump administration.”

A high profile example of Facebook removing content includes the recent removal of Alex Jones and InfoWars pages. According to Facebook: “Upon review, we have taken it down for glorifying violence, which violates our graphic violence policy, and using dehumanizing language to describe people who are transgender, Muslims and immigrants, which violates our hate speech policies.” This followed an announcement from Apple, which stated that it would remove all episodes of Alex Jones’ show from its podcast platform. Observing these events, journalist Michael Tracey tweeted: “As a result of this successful pressure campaign, Facebook has assumed even greater powers: to bar access to the platform on the basis of objectionable political content. That’s what people demanded: Please, Facebook, assert more dominance over public life”. And Yasha Levine, author of Surveillance Valley: The Secret Military History of the Internet, tweeted: “We begged our corporate overlords to be better masters of the information they let us see, and they answered our prayers. They are just and good. It’s a power that they will never abuse.”

LIVING & SOCIETY

Shortly after one federal judgeallowed the online release of 3D-printed gun blueprints, another federal judge blocked the designs, which digital firearms group Defense Distributed had briefly released. The blueprints included a plastic AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Students in Japan have created a VR simulation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, which took place on August 6, 1945. AP reporter Haruka Nuga writies: “By transporting users back in time to the moment when a city was turned into a wasteland, the students and their teacher hope to ensure that something similar never happens again.”

GENOMICS

The latest count of the number of consumers who have had their DNA tested is now over 17 million, according to a tweet by MIT Tech Review’s Antonio Regalado. Looking at the chart he shared, this number seems likely to double in the very near future.

FUNDING

MDLIVE, one of the nation’s largest telehealth providers, announced that it has secured $50 million in growth investment. According to CEO Rich Berner, the financing will be used “to help further accelerate our industry-leading consumer and clinician experience as well as accelerate the growth of the company.”

Evidation Health, a health and measurement company that helps life sciences and healthcare companies understand how everyday behaviors and health interact, has announced a $30M Series C funding. The company also announced a new data platform enabling its customers to analyze and process large-scale sensor and behavior data in clinically meaningful ways.
