The Fourth Wave: Digital Health Newsletter for Oct 23

MIT has announced plans to spend $1B on the creation of a new college for artificial intelligence. Slated to open in 2019, the school will combine AI, machine learning, and data science, with other academic disciplines including, one would assume, digital health. This is the largest investment in AI by a United States academic institution.

In the 37 years it has existed, the MacArthur Fellowship has never recognized a game developer as part of its ‘genius grant’ program. According to Mohawk Games CEO Soren Johnson, “The grant program has basically been concurrent with the entire history of video games. It just seems really weird that they basically pretend that video games don’t exist.” Johnson added in a series of tweets: “MacArthur Fellowships were announced yesterday. Since 1981, they have recognized 1,014 individuals for “exceptional creativity.” Past recipients include 4 cartoonists, 1 violin maker, 1 font designer, and 1 basket weaver. The list also includes 0 video game developers. Somehow, a program dedicated to supporting originality, innovation, and CONTEMPORARY WORK has completely excluded the art form that has grown the most – by orders of magnitude – during the program’s existence. If the MacArthur Foundation wanted to look for a place where their money would support art with the greatest potential impact on the next generation, they could find no better place than video games. I made this same argument last year, but this time, I’m going to name names. There are plenty of developers who have displayed exceptional creativity, are in the prime of their careers, and would benefit from the financial freedom the award promises. At this point, it feels like the MacArthur Foundation is going out of its way to exclude video games from their magic circle of what contributes to society and what doesn’t.
We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing; this is their loss.”

LIVING AND SOCIETY

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that could determine whether Facebook, Twitter, and other private corporate social media companies can censor users on their platforms‬ as well as whether users can challenge the companies on free speech grounds in First Amendment lawsuits

In reviewing a recent Google blog post: “When Octoberitis spooks your students, we’re here to help“, privacy rights lawyer. Joel Winston tweeted: “Google collects data on the 40 million students & teachers using Google Classroom, & 30 million using Chromebooks.”

Tiny automated machines could soon take care of the entire agricultural growing process and help reduce the use of chemicals. Process capabilities include the ability to map land, plant seeds, care for the crop, perform weeding, and harvesting.

Apple has launched a new tool enabling its users in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to download, change, or delete all the data that the company has collected on them.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has ordered Transdev to cease activity on a pilot-program using autonomous vehicles to transport school children.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to a customer’s tweet asking for a “ dog mode” feature that can be used when a pet owner leaves their animal in their car. The feature could include music, air conditioning being enabled, and a display on the screen for passersby to read, with info including the interior temperature of the vehicle and a note indicating that the owner will return shortly.

SPORTS AND FITNESS

John Foley, founder and CEO of Peloton, indicates that the company’s new treadmill and bootcamp experience could replace your gym membership. In the video interview by Cheddar’s Tim Stenovec, Foley talks about the impact of digital disruption of different industries and describes Peloton as being a ‘technology & innovation company’.

Prince Harry of the United Kingdom was recently spotted wearing the Oura ring, sparking international media interest in the new wearable sleep tracking device‬. According to the company, it is about to make a major push into the U.S. market.

Writing in the Washington Post, Scott Douglas describes how heart-rate training can help you meet your exercise goals. According to Douglas, “With wearable fitness trackers becoming the norm among recreational athletes, more of us know at any instant what our heart rate is during workouts. What we might not know is what that data means. That’s a shame, because basing your workout intensity on your heart rate can be a great way to meet your exercise goals.”

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

United Therapeutics will collaborate with CollPlant to develop 3D-printed lung transplants comprised of raw materials derived from genetically engineered plants.

CONSUMER PRODUCT INNOVATION

The new app from temperature-controlled mug Ember integrates with Apple Health to help make caffeine consumption tracking easier. This is a feature that Apple has offered since 2014.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, founder of e-commerce site Zozo, posted on Twitter that his company will soon be providing consumers with the ability to create 3D scans of their feet and then use the measurement data to buy shoes through his website.
