North’s new “Focals” are a $1,000 pair of smart glasses that can tell you the weather, read text messages, and connect to Amazon’s Alexa‬.

The Apple Watch’s new fall detection feature has been credited with helping a man in Swedenby notifying emergency services after he collapsed. Swedish publication Aftonbladet reports that Gustavo Rodriguez was struck with crippling back pain that caused him to double over and collapse to the floor. The Apple Watch’s fall detection algorithm identified Gustavo’s collapse and offered to call emergency services.

LIVING & SOCIETY

During a recent speech in Brussels, Apple’s Tim Cook said that tech is hurting people and regulation is needed to protect consumers. According to Cook: “We see vividly—painfully—how technology can harm rather than help. Platforms and algorithms that promised to improve our lives can actually magnify our worst human tendencies.”

The Kinsa thermometer tells firms in what regions to target their advertising based on your personal health data. As comedy Twitter account @internetofshit tweeted: “Use a cheap smart thermometer, get targeted flu ads. The future sucks.”

Automaker GM recently revealed that it secretly gathered data on 90,000 drivers’ radio-listening habits and locations.

Google is teaching children how to act online while positioning itself in schools as a trusted authority on digital citizenship.

In Sweden, thousands have had microchips inserted into their hands.

In Silicon Valley, parents are instructing their hired nannies to act as phone, tablet, computer, and TV police for their kids. The rules are actually stipulated in child care contracts.

In China, the restaurant Industry is becoming a tech battleground, with companies like Baidu and Tencent setting their sights on robot restaurants and food delivery. For example, at Robot.He, diners can scan a QR code to order their food and pay for it.

The results of a recent survey on who a self-driving car should kill when it has to make a choice vary by region. For example, people living in collectivist cultures like China and Japan are less likely to spare the young over the old.

A U.S. federal judge has ordered the Memphis police department to limit its surveillance of activists. The agency was found to be in violation of a previous court order prohibiting it from watching protesters and monitoring their social media accounts. In response to the ruling, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Tennessee Executive Director Hedy Weinberg said “being able to truly engage in dialogue about important issues without the threat of intimidation is vital to our democracy”.

Twitter says it ‘made a mistake’ when it failed to remove threatening tweets from the Florida “MAGAbomber” bomb suspect. Rochelle Ritchie tweeted several screenshots of the threatening tweets previously sent to her by the suspect along with a screenshot of Twitter’s response to the formal complaint she made to the company: “We have reviewed your report carefully and found that there was no violation of the Twitter Rules against abusive behavior.”

FDA CLEARANCE

The FDA has granted 510(k) clearance to Novarad’s OpenSight Augmented Reality (AR) System. This is the first AR medical solution for Microsoft HoloLens cleared by the agency for use in pre-operative surgical planning. Novarad’s system renders 2D, 3D, and 4D images of patients interactively, while accurately overlaying them directly onto the patient’s body, which allows doctors to see the patient and into the patient simultaneously to more accurately plan surgery.

FUNDING

Enable Injections, maker of the wearable and disposable enFuse large volume wearable injector (LVWI) device for medication, has landed $40M. For more information on the company’s system, see this previous article in Medgadget.
