The Digital Health Update by Paul Sonnier — June 1, 2016 — #224

Dear Group,

More drama in the wearables market, as Jawbone has stopped producing its UP line of  fitness trackers and sold the remaining inventory to a third party. Of the major digital health wearable tech players, FitBit evolved from dedicated fitness-only trackers to a more general smartwatch-type device, Apple has its general purpose smartwatch, Misfit was acquired by Fossil, and Withings was acquired by Nokia. There is still a vague rumor that Jawbone is planning to release a medical/clinical wearable at some point in the future.

And in a major study by the U.S. government’s National Toxicology Program, a small link has been found between cell phones and an increased risk of cancer among male rats. Female rats were apparently unaffected but male rats had a small increase in gliomas cancer in the brain and schwannomas cancer in the heart. Also, according to Glenn Fleishman at Macworld, the “study also shows rats live longer when exposed to cell radiation, but that’s not being reported“. To chime in on this topic you can comment in the Digital Health group discussion here.

If Virtual Reality (VR) is to become a major platform of the future (think mobile and the PC), this is a step in that direction: HP and MSI hope to convince you to carry a VR rig on your back like a Ghostbuster.

Lastly, as Charles Ornstein reports, doctors are firing back at bad Yelp reviews online but in the process, some are revealing patients’ medical information. That’s a big HIPAA no no. Here’s the group discussion.
