Dear Group,

The clash between the healthcare establishment and Pokémon Go was probably inevitable, but I didn’t foresee it being an analog, as opposed to digital-centric issue. The mobile, augmented reality (AR) gaming app—which a prominent neuroscientist says is artificially stimulating our brain’s reward centers just like a drug—has been downloaded over 75 million times and still has room to grow, since it’s only launched in 32 of more than 100 markets in which Apple’s App Store and Google Play operate. It’s currently ranked first in downloads and accounts for an astonishing 50% of all app revenue, making it potentially the most lucrative game ever. Given this massive market penetration, it’s now beginning to infiltrate the healthcare system in an unusual way. As group member Bruce Lee writes in Forbes, players are venturing into hospitals chasing Pikachu and other Pokémon characters, aka species. This is having a negative impact on hospitals, disrupting their operations, distracting personnel, bringing in dirt and infectious diseases, not to mention that players can see and hear patient information. They might even get hurt or sick themselves. As a result, one hospital and the American Hospital Association have asked the game’s publisher to remove healthcare facilities from the game.

Aside from the clash with healthcare, Pokémon Go’s is also serving as the foundation for an ecosystem of third-party digital health solution providers to disrupt the industry from the outside. As I’ve pointed out many times, the healthcare system does practically nothing to prevent disease and, according to the CDC, 86% of healthcare costs are due to chronic, preventable diseases. So it’s this aspect of digital health that affords such a major opportunity to disrupt ‘health care’ by helping prevent disease in the first place.

The launch of the Nintendo OEM wearable has been delayed until September, but third-party solutions are still stepping up and amplifying Pokémon Go Digital Health opps. GOQii—which has its own wearable fitness-tracking device—has been organizing events in India called “Active Sundays”, which now incorporate the game into various fitness activities.  As a result, the California-based startup saw it’s Mumbai event grow to 10 times the normal amount of people.

There’s also a smart shoe concept for Pokémon Go that allows you to play with your feet. New York-based startup Vixole is planning to crowdfund the shoes, which will have LED displays and sensors that interface with a mobile app allowing players to control what images appear on the shoes and also receive notifications. There will also be notifications.

Another company, P3 Communications, has come out with a game called PokeFit that gives Pokémon Go a real-time fitness dashboard on Android. The app gives PoGo trainers a dashboard on the game screen tracking play time, distance walked, and energy expended.

On the humor side, a viral video has been viewed over one million times. Francis, who appears to be obese, was apparently supposed to get out and exercise more as part of being allowed to play Pokémon Go. However, it seems he had other ideas in mind, including a spending spree!
