The Digital Health Update by Paul Sonnier ⋅ Oct 7, 2016 ⋅ #242

Dear Group,

According to analysis of demographic data from the last century, researchers are saying that, despite all the modern medical advancements, antibiotics, vaccines, the benefits of healthy lifestyles and sanitation, the oldest living people simply aren’t dying any later due to a hardwired biological limitation that means humans are unlikely to live past 115 years. The ideal here, however, is that we live long, healthy, vibrant lives up until that point. But some question the analysis, including UCLA geneticist Leonid Kruglyak, who tweeted that the recent appearance of an age “plateau” may be driven by outliersAccording to Judith Campisi, from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, while “There’s no question that we have postponed aging, to engineer an increase in maximum lifespan we’ll probably have to modify so many genes that it won’t be possible within our lifespan—or even our grandchildren’s lifespan”. I’m still hoping that J. Craig Venter, CEO at Human Longevity, Inc., will tweet something about this.

The latest snapshot of global digital health investing and startup funding has been published by StartUp Health. 2016 is on track to be the biggest year ever, with $6.6B invested YTD, $2.4B of that in Q3 alone. 50% of this is occurring outside the United States, including most notably $500M for Ping An Good Doctor and $448M for Babytree, both operating in China. The biggest deal in the US was $500M for Onduo, the diabetes-focused joint venture between Sanofi and Verily (Google/Alphabet).

I’ve posted a new digital health quote on the Story of Digital Health Instagram account. This one is by Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook.
