Dear Group,

I was interviewed this past week by Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter, hosts of Community Health Center‘s radio show “Conversations on Health Care”. Community Health Center is a Connecticut-based nonprofit provider of healthcare to more than 145,000 people. For those interested, the recorded audio podcast is available here.

The very first cardiac imaging solution that connects to an Android smartphone has been cleared by the FDA. The new Philips cardiac transducer weighs less than a smartphone and is part of the company’s Lumify portable diagnostic ultrasound system that’s ideal for use in emergency care, critical care, and ambulances.

Speaking of ambulances, Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital have deployed special new ambulances equipped with CT scanners and Internet-connected cameras enabling mobile diagnosisand treatment of stroke victims. Neurologists located at the hospitals can prescribe life-saving medications to dissolve clots, treat blood pressure, reverse the effects of any blood-thinners, and restore blood flow to the brain much sooner than if the patient waited to arrive at the hospital. These are reportedly among the first dozen or so in the US. According to Dr. James Conners, head of cerebrovascular disease at Rush University Medical Center, “Time really is of the essence. For every minute that goes by of a blockage in the brain, you lose about 2 million brain cells.”

Even quicker response times by caregivers are being enabled by an app called PulsePoint. The creation of former fire chief Richard Price, the app distributes a city’s 911 system alert to CPR-certified people near someone in need of CPR and/or defibrillation. It also tells them the location of the closest portable defibrillator/AED. Nearly a million people in the US have signed up to provide assistance and alerts have been issued in 13,000 cardiac events. The most recent event to make the news occured in Seattle, where a medical student and a cardiac nurse treated a man who had collapsed until paramedics arrived, probably saving his life.
