Dear Group,

Pfizer is sponsoring the “Advancing Care for Patients Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer (mBC)” challenge, in collaboration with Health 2.0, to encourage innovators to harness technology & develop cutting edge solutions that will help enrich the lives of patients living with mBC. The challenge is organized into 3 phases with milestones that correlate to successive stages in tech development. The development to beta phase involves mentoring, funding, and support to get to a viable prototype. A total of $250,000 in prize funding will be awarded to tech-enabled solutions with the greatest potential to enrich the lives of patients with mBC. Organizations, developers, entrepreneurs, designers, and innovators are encouraged to submit applications at AdvancingMBCPatientCare.com by January 20, 2017.

2.4 million people downloaded a video game for the world’s largest dementia research experiment. By recording the sense of direction and navigational skills of players moving a virtual sailboat, researchers hope to use the data to develop a dementia test and possibly diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in its earliest stages.  Dr. Hugo Spiers of University College London Spatial Cognition Group told the BBC: “What we’re able to announce to the world is it does decline across the lifespan, the ability to shoot the flare back to the target—that sense of direction.”

The US FDA is requesting comments by Dec 2 on new draft guidance for industry entitled “Software as a Medical Device (SaMD): Clinical Evaluation.” The guidance includes establishing scientific validity, clinical performance, and analytical validity of SaMD and is intended to provide globally harmonized principles of when and what type of clinical evaluation is appropriate based on the software risk.

Unfortunately, it seems that digital technology is worsening the rate of traffic fatalities before the anticipated decrease. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in the first six months of this year, highway deaths have jumped 10.4% compared to the same period last year. Hands-free solutions have not helped as the fundamental issue not being addressed is the cognitive workload on the brain, i.e. distraction. Autonomous driving and safety features are expected to curtail this problem as adoption grows.
