In this week’s Digital Health Update — sent first exclusively to subscribers of my free Constant Contact email newsletter, which you can subscribe to below — I point to the digital health think tank organized by Dell EMC’s Healthcare group that I participated in. Other participants included John Lynn, Linda Stotsky, Joe Babaian, Dr. Joe Kim, Andy DeLaO, Dan Munro, Dr. Jeff Trent, Shahid Shah, and Dave Dimond. The enlightening discussion focused on three key areas of digital health: consumerism in healthcare, precision medicine, and big data plus AI in healthcare. The event was livestreamed and the recorded video is available for viewing here. Following the event several of us toured TGen, aka the Translational Genomics Research Institute, where we had a rare sighting of Illumina’s newest genomic sequencing machine. Photographic proof is provided!

The Boston Marathon took place on Monday and digital health adoption was incredible, as one might imagine with marathoners, who track everything possible from which insights might enhance their performance.

In a bit of breaking news since I sent out yesterday’s newsletter, Alphabet’s Verily has initiated a significant Digital Health study of 10,000 people. Genomics and wearables will be used to gather health and other relevant data of participants over the course of several years.

The Digital Health Update for April 19th

I was in Phoenix, AZ this week, where I had the pleasure of participating in a digital health think tank put together by Dell EMC’s Healthcare group. Other participants included John Lynn, Linda Stotsky, Joe Babaian, Dr. Joe Kim, Andy DeLaO, Dan Munro, Dr. Jeff Trent, Shahid Shah, and Dave Dimond. The enlightening discussion focused on three key areas: consumerism in healthcare, precision medicine, and big data plus AI in healthcare. One of the recurring themes of the event was behavior change in disease prevention and management. As we know, digital health can help people make positive changes in their lives, but it’s not a panacea and there are a wide spectrum of possible tools, with no single one being preferred for everyone. The above image is from a tweet I sent out titled “Behavior change is tough“.

At the far-right side of digital health use in behavior change we have the community of runners, namely marathon runners. The Boston Marathon took place on Monday and wearable tech of all types was everywhere.

On the topic of precision medicine, Dr. Brian Druker of Oregon Health & Science University was interviewed by Dr. Eric Topol, editor-in-chief of Medscape. Early cancer detection — another key topic of the Dell EMC think tank — was covered. You can view the video and read the transcript here.

Spotted in the wild (tweet): Illumina’s new NovaSeq DNA sequencer in use at TGen (Translational Genomics Research Institute). The tour followed the Dell EMC Healthcare think tank. Reference Matthew Herper’s article “Illumina Promises To Sequence Human Genome For $100 — But Not Quite Yet” for the significance of this rare sighting.

If there was a record for the amount of negative press a digital health company has ever received, it may have been broken by Theranos. In an agreement with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the company has agreed to not operate its blood labs for two years.
