The Digital Health Newsletter for Sep 19, 2017

Internet access is critical for digital health to reach people who need it, yet according to a new report from the United Nations International Telecommunication Union and the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, over 52% of people on the planet still don’t have Internet access. The annual report— The State of Broadband 2017: Broadband Catalyzing Sustainable Development—provides a unique global snapshot of broadband network access and affordability, with country-by-country data measuring broadband access against key advocacy targets set by the Commission in 2011.

Epic Systems, the biggest EHR company, has taken a digital health baby step of sorts in health data interoperability. The company is now offering an app for patients called ‘Share Everywhere’, which allows them to pull up their healthcare records and visually show them on a mobile device (or other computer) to their doctor or other healthcare providers. As Charles Christian, VP of Technology and Engagement at the Indiana Health Information Exchange puts it, the app isn’t really a form of interoperability: “It’s not really moving data around but providing access to it.” A witty quip highlighting just how marginal this advancement is in terms of actual health data interoperability was made by Eva Sanchez Guerrero on my LinkedIn post, who called it an “Epic baby step”.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

While this is technically not exclusively a women’s health topic, Bertha Coombs from CNBC tweeted that Oscar Health is initiating an advertising campaign for women and men to enroll in Obamacare health insurance during the open enrollment period. This will help address the Trump Administration’s decision to slash spending on advertising and promotion for enrollment under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

A new radio frequency electronic massage system for the vagina leaves you ‘neater & tighter’, according to a report by Andrea Downey in The Sun. The treatment, which takes about 20 minutes and is billed as an alternative to surgery, “feels like a hot stone massage” and supposedly tightens the tissue and might also be used to help with incontinence. The cost for a series of 3-4 sessions is £1,200.

WEARABLE TECH

new fitness, pet, and object tracker by tracMo uses Bluetooth to increase the wireless range from 400 feet versus the typical, non-cellular or Bluetooth tracker range of 100 feet.

It turns out that Major League Baseball team the Boston Red Sox used text messages on a Fitbit Surge —not Apple Watch, as previously reported —in a recent sign-stealing controversy.

Analysis by researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that two Fitbit fitness tracker models were vulnerable to interception of data sent to and from the company’s cloud servers. In response, Fitbit has already developed software patches to address the issues.

A new smart glove exoskeleton from Nuada augments hand strength and coordination. The glove contains sensors and electronic tendons that serve as an electromechanical support system that could help people with illness or injury that has resulted in reduced hand strength.

LIVING AND SOCIETY

More than 500 million people in China are talking to the iFlytek AI voice recognition platform, including at the Anhui Provincial Hospital, which has deployed ten ‘robot girl’ voice assistants to greet visitors in the lobby. Patients tell it their symptoms and are directed to the correct department.

Instead of merely focusing on productivity and connectivity, a new ad for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 features ways the device can bring people together for love.

HEALTHCARE

Steve Jurvetson shared an incredible video of a real-time, full-body MRI movie view into the human body! As Steve describes it, “I spent a full 2 hours in the tube and got a lot of imagery. My favorite part was the video of my heart beating. To get that, they had electrodes on my chest to synchronize the imaging to the heart beat.” Steve also shared the photos and story on Flickr plus linked to the Health Nucleus website.
FUNDING
Augmedics, developer of an augmented-reality (AR) surgical visualization system, has raised $8.3M. The company’s ViZOR System gives surgeons “X-ray vision” allowing them to virtually see inside of a patient during surgery. The first intended use is in minimally invasive spinal surgeries. The global market for systems of this type is expected to reach $900 million by 2020.
