The Digital Health Update by Paul Sonnier ⋅ Sep 1, 2016 ⋅ #237

Dear Group,

With the dog days of summer nearly over, we just had National Dog Day here in the United States. Yes, there actually is such a day, and rightfully so, as our pets are important to our health and vice versa. Animals—dogs in particular—are being used in therapeutic applications for patients, older adults, and even children with social disorders. As with everything else, there’s an app to digitize connections with animals in this regard. Called Bark’N’Borrow, the app offers the opportunity for people without dogs to have a ‘doggy date’ and owners to also trade-off pet-sitting duties. The app can of course also enable therapies like the above examples. For instance, one hospital reports having a shortage of therapy dogs.

Also on the topic of animals and pets, it may come as a surprise—or not, given the human medical regulatory environment—that there is wearable tech solution available to monitor the health of your dog or cat. Called ‘Kyon’, the collar and smartphone app will monitor your pet and alert you if your animal is dangerously hot, cold, or thirsty, its location (helpful if you can’t find them), and even its mood. The app also allows users to set reminders for veterinarian visits, medication, or when it’s time for a walk. This is a very holistic digital health solution that, if it were used in a human application, would likely see some elements crossover from the consumer to the medical realm, hence encounter more barriers and increased costs. It’s no wonder there are people hacking things like Nike+ iPod Sport system to create smaller and cheaper wearable tech emergency monitoring for grandma.

While mostly unrelated to pets, ‘Double Dog’ is a new app that’s sure to get one of your idiot friends killed. Using the app, friends can wager money or points to see who can do the craziest things. The sender of the dare gets video proof that the dare has been completed and then makes payment.

In stark contrast with the opinions of many in the medical establishment, 59% of Americans think science & technology has had a positive effect on health & medicine. Unlike manufacturing and other industries, healthcare is still resistant to the digital revolution, with predictable sub-optimal solutions and outcomes being the result, hence the President of the American Medical Association useing the term ‘digital snake oil‘.
