India’s telecom regulator hasapproved new net neutrality rules that, with some exceptions —like remote surgery, autonomous vehicles, critical IoT services, and enterprise-wired networks created through leased lines — will ban the blocking, degrading, slowing down (throttling), or granting preferential speeds or treatment to any content by telecommunications Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Also prohibited is so-called “zero-rating” of Internet data. According to Wikipedia, “this is the practice of providing Internet access without financial cost under certain conditions, such as by only permitting access to certain websites or by subsidizing the service with advertising. Critics believe zero-rating exploits the poor, creates opportunities for censorship, and disrupts the free market.”

For the first time, CRISPR gene drives have been tested in mammals, in this case mice. Researchers state that this technique could be used to eradicate problematic animal populations by ensuring that selected mutations are pssed down to an animal’s offspring. Unfortunately — or fortunately, depending on your point of view — the results of the testing were inconsistent and many hurdles remain.

PRIVACY

A new investigation of IoT devices for the home — including printers, toothbrushes, and TVs — has revealed a ‘staggering’ level of tracking of how you live your life. Once collected, the data is transmitted to companies. Some bizarre examples include “a smartwatch that asks to be able to reboot your phone, and an upright vacuum cleaner that wants to record audio on your mobile device.” In addition to the manufacturer of the IoT device, there are myriad other entites operating behind the scences. Over the course of 15 minutes, one smart TV tested connected with 700 distinct addresses on the Internet.

Walmart has patented surveillance technology that can be used to eavesdrop on worker’s conversations to help ensure that they meet the company’s “performance metrics.” Called “Listening to the Frontend”, the system might also be used to collect audio of employee conversations with customers.

M&A

Kairos, a startup that provides facial recognition services for brand marketing, has acquired another startup, Ireland-based EmotionReader, which uses algorithms to determine facial expressions in video content.

GENOMICS

Caltech researchers have developed a DNA-based artificial neural network that can correctly identify handwritten numbers, a classic machine learning problem. The work is desribed as “a significant step in demonstrating the capacity to program artificial intelligence into synthetic biomolecular circuits.”
