The Digital Health Update by Paul Sonnier — June 15, 2016 — #226

Dear Group,

According to a report in The Intercept, the United States National Security Agency (NSA) is researching the possibility of exploiting internet-connected biomedical devices like pacemakers, according to a senior official. “We’re looking at it sort of theoretically from a research point of view right now,” said NSA deputy director Richard Ledgett, who added that, in regard to the billions of connected IoT (Internet of Things) devices are both a security nightmare or a signals intelligence bonanza.

In his 1942 short story ‘Runaround’, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov wrote that the first law of robotics is that “Robots may not harm people”. His second rule, “A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law”, is being highlighted in a unique way by Alexander Reben, a roboticist and artist who has built a small robot whose only purpose is to hurt people by randomly delivering a pinprick with a small needle on a fingertip. Of course there are already real-world examples of robots designed to harm humans, e.g. military drones and police robots. Reben’s goal with his creation is to “start a robust conversation among ethicists, philosophers, lawyers, and others about where technology is going—and what dangers robots will present humanity in the future”. I think the future is already here.

While the above is terrifying in a totally different way, I was also a bit terrified before my first keynote speech in South Korea last year. Perhaps this new app by Ummo might have helped? The NY Times says “getting over stage fright with the help of your smartphone“. In my case, the fear is (mostly!) gone, but certainly it might help me optimize and improve my public speaking. That and more practice.

An Internet shutdown can be a “a warning sign of atrocity”, so it’s great to see that Access Now has launched a global #KeepItOn campaign with nearly 70 organizations committed to fightighting Internet shutdowns.

Last, but not least, it appears that the Theranos saga will be played out on the big screen and Jennifer Lawrence has been cast in the role of Theranos’ controversial CEO Elizabeth Holmes in a new movie.
