Dear Group,

fascinating new digital ‘toothbrush with a camera’ is being introduced by a startup named Prophix. The live video viewable on your smartphone provides a means of seeing your current oral health status while you brush. The video reveals spots you miss plus you can save pictures of areas of concern or interest and track progress to see trends over time.

Since Apple does not report sales numbers for the Apple Watch, we have to rely on informed estimates. The latest is that over 12 million units have been shipped and generated $5.7 billion in revenue since the device’s April 2015 introduction. This puts Apple’s Apple Watch business at $10B.

The first instance of a Tesla driver dying in a crash while using autopilot mode has been reported. The accident occurred when the car’s sensor system failed to register a large tractor-trailer crossing the highway. According to witnesses, the driver may not have been monitoring the road as Tesla advises autopilot users to do, but was watching a Harry Potter movie. In addition to the changes in the sensor setup, types used, and parameters, perhaps a system that forces drivers to pay attention in autopilot mode will prevent further cases like this. In response to the criticism over safety, Nick Bilton from Vanity Fair tweeted, “1.3 million people die a year in car accidents. Yet, 1 person dies in a Tesla on autopilot and people decry driverless cars as unsafe“. To put this in historical perspective, here’s a tweet pic by Fast Company’s Harry McCracken “Your 1904 tech news update: Mrs. Rathbone’s death blamed on defect in newfangled horseless carriage.”

Nonetheless, just as in healthcare innovation leveraging digital and non-digital tools, there is a line that we must observe. Christopher Mims, a technology journalist at the NY Times, aptly summarizes this in a tweet “You don’t get to have a public beta when others’ lives are on the line.”

Can we diagnose disease by analyzing speech patterns? Sonde Health thinks so, as this SciAm piece investigates. According to the press release, the company is developing a voice-based technology platform for monitoring and diagnosing mental and physical medical conditions. The technology, which is licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, screens and monitors voice samples for various mental and physical medical issues. The analysis looks at changes in the acoustic characteristics of a person’s voice. Depression is a key focus area as are respiratory and cardiovascular medical conditions.

And finally, a man Loved his iPhone so much, he married it. We’ll see if there’s an annulment or divorce when the iPhone 8 launches. The new device is rumored to have a curved glass display.

ECOSYSTEM PARTNER NEWS
Validic and SAP announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the adoption of digital health and utilization of patient-generated health data globally. This joint-announcement was made at the SAP Personalized Medicine Forum in Germany. Validic’s industry leading digital health platform will be integrated into the SAP Connected Health platform to enable the analysis and processing of patient data in real time. SAP’s Connected Health platform already integrates clinical data from the patient’s electronic health record and biometric data from genome sequencing; Validic now provides the critical access to patient health data generated outside the four walls of the clinical setting. The digital health data from wearables, apps, and in-home medical devices is key to a connected health solution. Roughly 99.8% of patient’s lives take place outside the hospital or physician’s office, and bringing that data into the context of care is the only way to deliver personalized medicine. This is a deep commitment for both Validic, SAP, and SAP’s clients around the world.
