Dear Group,

One of the many unsung benefits of digital health is the opportunity it creates for stealth health, wherein people behave in health ways without explicitly having intended to do so. The latest example is Pokémon GO, the augmented reality game that has become the hottest thing in mobile gaming and is having positive side effect of fostering increased physical activity on the part of players. The game is also increasing social interactions, which is usually a positive, but can sometimes present odd and suspicious appearances, like when three men met at 3am in a park, bringing police attention on them. Even more concerning, as Omari Akil writes, is that Pokémon Go could be a death sentence for a black man. He says that he couldn’t help but thinking “of the countless Black Men who have had the police called on them because they looked “suspicious” or wondering what a second amendment exercising individual might do if I walked past their window a 3rd or 4th time in search of a Jigglypuff.” Lastly, it’s been reported that robbers are getting in on the ‘game’. Police in Missouri arrested four suspects who had used Pokémon Go to lure several teens to a shopping mall late at night, where they then robbed them of their personal belongings.

Last week the Soyuz MS-01 space capsule docked with the International Space Station. United States astronaut and biologist Kate Rubins stated that she’s excited to be doing DNA sequencing while onboard the ISS. Thanks to advancements in the size of genetic sequencing equipment, Rubins will be using Oxford Nanopore’s pocket-size MinION sequencer. The plan is to see how it behaves in microgravity, including whether the liquid layer is formed in the same way as it is on Earth, and whether the sequence goes through the nanopores in the same way. Microbial communities on board the ISS’ 10-year-old closed loop system (recycled water and air) are of interest, especially the evolution of microbes.

Digital health funding has been robust for the first half of 2016. Startup Health reported that around $4B was invested, which is a full $1B more than during the same period in 2015. In terms of scale, this represents 10% of the $40B in startup venture funding in the US so far this year. Digital health mirrors the trend of late-stage companies, especially unicorns—private companies valued at $1B or more—sucking up most of the funding. Big winners overall were Uber and Snapchat. Big winners in digital health included Oscar, Clover, NantHealth (recently IPO’d), Human Longevity, Flatiron Health, and Ping An Good Doctor (China).

Speaking of China and digital health investing, GG Ventures points out that VCs are betting on the great Chinese fitness boom. With a growing middle class and over 380 million digital natives aged 18-35, apps that gamify fitness, socialize working out, and track fitness are hot. However, while the authors state that “Tech startups that facilitate people “getting outside” will be a huge market”, they neglect to mention that “getting outside” can literally be hazardous to your health on some days because of the air pollution in China. This was highlighted in the documentary film “How to Let Go of the World and Love All The Things Climate Can’t Change” (preview video), by Josh Fox. The VCs ‘betting on the great Chinese fitness boom’ may also want to consider investing in digital health solutions (apps, devices, etc) that address this issue, including, at the most basic level, apps and websites that show whether the air quality is safe or dangerous for humans on a given day.
